BG Medical Welcomes Vertical Farming Expert Nick Brusatore to Scientific Advisory Board

The function of the SAB is to provide advice and guidance in developing new solutions for natural medicinal production, diagnostic device design, and telehealth naturopathy services. The initial focus of the SAB will be on technology acquisitions to facilitate Internet-based solutions for the 50 million uninsured patients in the USA, and patients looking to augment traditional health care packages with cost effective nature-based practices.

Mr. Brusatore is the CEO of Vertical Designs, Ltd., a firm for designing vertical farming technologies related to food and natural medicine production. Nick is the designer of TerraSphere systems and several well-established technologies for cloning and plant tissue propagation. He is an innovative eco-entrepreneur, natural capitalist, mechanical designer, and inventor. Nick has presented on the benefits of vertical farm production facilities and energy saving technologies upon the international stage, including Vancouver, Haiti, New York, and various college universities. Mr. Brusatore also serves as the Chairman of the British Columbia Institute of Technologys Centre for Applied Research and Innovation Advisory Committee.

X3D Expands to Support Medical and Volume Visualization

The EXtensible 3D Graphics standard X3D continues to evolve include more capabilities and improve the clarity and consistency of its specifications. The third upgrade to X3D (V3.3) release expands X3D capability to include volume visualization, user-selectable units and internal technical changes, and it is in final draft ballot at ISO with an expected release by summer 2013. The publicly released V3.3 specification documents are available at http://www.web3d.org/realtime-3d/specification/version/V3.3. This work advances X3D as the leading royalty-free open standard and run-time architecture to represent and communicate 3D scenes and objects using XML.

The X3D V3.3 standard includes significant new functionality for cross-platform, reproducible interactive 3D presentations of anatomic volumetric data (e.g. CT, MRI, PET scan, and ultrasound), annotations, CAD models as well as the integration of semantic knowledge-bases (i.e. medical ontologies such as SNOMED CT). As a Web standard, these rendered displays can be distributed and shared through secure services and applied to other domains such as non-invasive sensing and geophysics. The Web3D Consortium Medical Working Group authored the specification and has successfully demonstrated several applications with international collaborators including informed consent, anatomic education, and surgical training.

The new support for expressive volume rendering styles and annotations in X3D V3.3 is a milestone for international interoperability within and across the healthcare enterprise. As a web-aware platform for reproducible medical presentations, such an open-standard is an integral tool in the effort to lower costs and improve quality of care. emphasized Michael Aratow, MD, FACEP and Co-Chair of the Medical Working Group. The functionality for the interchange of volumetric, polygonal and textual visualizations is collected into a X3D node set specified as the Medical Interchange Profile, allowing for software development utilizing only a small, focused subset of the entire X3D specification relevant to clinical care.

Another significant change is the addition of user-definable units through the creation of the new UNIT statement. The user can select the units of choice from Angstroms to light-years, with similar choices for angle, force, and mass. X3D will handle all of the conversions from other units (e.g., speed) and other models dependent on these base units. This powerful new feature allows model builders to construct their model in the unit most appropriate for their work.

In addition, significant work has taken place to improve the overall design consistency of the entire X3D standard. This includes making the Geospatial Component more compatible with the Navigation Component, as well as ensuring that field inheritance is now fully consistent. Most notably, this all been achieved with minimal or no effect on backwards compatibility.

BOKA Powell-Designed Forest Park Medical Center at Frisco Square Completed

BOKA Powell LLC, a Dallas-based architecture and design firm, has completed work on the Forest Park Medical Center at Frisco Square. The four-story, 141,500 sq. ft. full-service surgical hospital features VIP patient suites, an upmarket restaurant offering healthy choice cuisine, and an upscale ambiance, starting with a circular drive that leads to a grand lobby.

The typical Forest Park Medical Center patient has high service expectations, and we wanted our design to respond accordingly. We gathered inspirational ideas by touring four and five-star resorts and spas around the country, said Don Powell, principal of BOKA Powell. We worked to emulate the richness, drama and lighting quality of what we saw, as our goal was to create a first-class environment where patients can heal most comfortably.

The development includes 56,000 square feet of medical office space on two floors, over 34,000 square feet of retail space for restaurants and shops, and a 600-car parking structure. The hospital features 12 operating rooms, 40 patient rooms and 14 VIP patient suites with attached family areas.

Every aspect of the hospital, from the stunning fountain and motor court at the entrance, to the grand lobby to the luxury patient rooms, provides the ambiance of a resort spa, said Sean Kirton, project manager with BOKA Powell.

The team incorporated early 20th century building details with modern finishes to design the exterior, which celebrates the drama of the art deco period with an eclectic, contemporary style that complements Frisco Squares urban character.

This project sets a new standard for healthcare in the U.S., said Nick Summerville, chief operating officer of the Neal Richards Group, developer of the project. Its demonstrative of Forest Park Medical Centers philosophy which delivers world-class healthcare in a hospitality-rich environment.
