Casa Forma Short Listed for the International Design and Architecture Awards for 2012

(PRWEB) August 23, 2012

Casa Forma the London based interior and architectural design firm has been short listed for the International Design and Architecture Awards for 2012 to be held at the Dorchester Hotel, London, on Friday 28th September 2012.

The International Design and Architecture Awards are acclaimed in the interior design industry because firms are short listed by industry professionals then it is up to potential clients to decide on the winner. This is a great measure of both creativity and commercial appeal of our projects. says Faiza Seth (CEO of Casa Forma).

The International Design (ID&A) & Architecture Awards, are hosted by design et al, a leading UK interior design magazine. At design et al, their aim is to commend design, recognize talent, create opportunities and quite simply to offer inspiration. The ID&A Awards offer a number of different categories covering residential architecture, interior design and product design and to meet the demand of their clients, more categories have, again, been added to the schedule.

What makes these awards different to other design awards?

Like all design et al awards, The International Design & Architecture Awards are not judged by a panel. Short listed entries are presented online, and voting is open to industry professionals along with their readers, clients and the general public to be the judge of each and every award. The judges are also potential future clients.

Focusing on the residential sector, these awards celebrate the best in design, looking for outstanding architecture, interior design and product designs.

The ID&A Awards offers a number of award categories and Casa Forma has been short listed in five of these categories :

my Travel Assistant, the iOS App for Travelers Simplifies Expense Tracking During International Travel and More!

Budapest, Hungary (PRWEB) July 19, 2012

my Travel Assistant by Gamma Project is a professional app for global travelers that integrates into a single, convenient package a smart, multi-currency expense tracker with automatic currency conversion, a 156-currency monetary exchange rate converter and a 51-language translator.

Designed as an intelligent assistant for international travelers, the app stores all expenses in both the local and converted, home currencies. With a high-end, dark wood-grain GUI, the app includes no instructions for use; all operations are intuitive and trouble-free.

One-time set-up includes entering the user’s language, home currency, and the frequency of exchange rate updates.

The designers have paid great attention to human factors.

For example, English, Spanish, French, Italian and German appear in their respective places in the scrolling list that appears by touching “Your Language”, but the group of five most common languages also appears at the head of the list.

Similarly, the app defaults to the user’s local currency, with the main currencies – US dollar, yen, euro, swiss francs, british pounds and Canadian dollar – leading an alphabetical list of 156 different currencies.

Used currencies are added automatically to the top of the currency list, so next time you can quickly access them without having to scroll to the list again.

Set-up complete, the home page displays four buttons: Travel Expenses, Currency Converter, Translator, and Quick Add. A summary of the last expense is also shown on the main screen for convenience. The quick add function allows fast expense entry, and goes straight to the entry page of the last trip.

Travel Expenses is the heart of the app, and the Travel Expenses page contains an artfully designed scrolling list of all trips ordered by date by default. The order of trips and expense items can be customized.

The user may substitute any photo or graphic for the generic icon displayed with each travel expense listing, which includes the trip’s label (i.e. the country or city), the description of the expense (e.g. work, personal, etc.), the date and the total amount of all expenses, automatically converted to the user’s home currency.

Selecting any entry brings up an itemized listing of each individual expense for that particular trip. When entering an expense in the local currency the user may enter a description, and choose a predefined category. Included, with appropriate icons, are: Transportation (Flight), Cash Withdrawal, Taxi, Local Transportation, Hotel, Camping, Fuel, Road Tolls, Souvenirs, Food & Drink, Treatment (Hospital), Shopping, Entertainment, Additional Fees, and Other.

Sums are entered using the built-in, multi-function calculator.

Both the trips and the expenses scrolling list is fully editable, and displays individual expenses in both local and home currencies, plus the date and description.

The currency converter function features side-by-side odometer displays for going from any one of 156 currencies to another. The large entry keypad also includes a calculator function. Results are displayed in the dual odometer highlight window with the currency listing. For example, entering 1,555 displays “Japanese Yen – 1,555 JPY” on the left cylinder, and “US Dollars – 20.202 USD” on the right.

You can quickly change the direction of the conversion by tapping the arrow button situated in the center of the odometer display.

The translator function employs two text fields, each with a labeled flag beside it. The user selects his native language/flag and enters the word or phrase to be translated in the text field. The translator supports copy and paste functionality, allowing translation of eMails or web content. Selecting any of 51 languages displays the translation in red type in the second text field.

Marine Corps Chapel Honored with Prestigious International Interior Design Award

Quantico, Virginia (PRWEB) June 06, 2012

For masterful execution, near perfect detailing, and a wonderful integration between the interior and exterior architecture, the Semper Fidelis Memorial Chapel in Quantico, Virginia has been honored with a BESTaward by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), Rocky Mountain Chapter. Designed by Fentress Architects, the non-denominational Chapel is a space defined by simplicity, serenity, and purity of form and materials. The project expresses the concept of a canopied field chapel, providing a seamless transition of natural materials from exterior to interior.

Design for People Completed in 2009, the 2,276 square-foot Semper Fidelis Memorial Chapel enables friends and families to honor the sacrifices of fallen heroes and loved ones, or host events and ceremonies that look to the future. Expansive glass walls, etched with text expressing time-tested Marine Corps ideals, are framed by natural fieldstone and timber columns to establish a seamless relationship with nature. The chapels location offers a commanding hilltop view of the National Museum of the Marine Corps, while chapel and museum are physically linked by a network of intricately landscaped trails through Semper Fidelis Memorial Park. The connection alludes to the Corps motto of Semper Fi, or Always Faithful.

Aspects of the Chapel are intended to speak a soldiers language, with rectangular wood and stone pews that reference ammo boxes, and a sharply defined slate roof that evokes a humble tarp. The ceilings open-truss natural timber structure features exposed diagonal wood decking illuminated by soft indirect lighting that becomes a singular design element.

Sustainability The Chapel was designed to meet standards for LEED Silver certification. The design includes a geothermal HVAC system and a mechanical system that service a large, glass-walled space. This was achieved with a hidden under-floor air distribution delivery system for energy efficiency and comfort.

Outside Influencers Two outside influences were vital to the successful development of the Chapels design. The Heritage Foundation, which was the direct client, endorsed the metaphor of a field combat zone chapel as an important aspect of not only the development of the architectural expression, but also as an opportunity for the building to tell the story of the Marine Corps. Secondly, the Timothy Day Foundation, founded by Tim Day, a former Marine Captain and successful businessman, was a major donor and heavily involved in reviews of the final development of design. These two Foundations not only allowed for a seamless design process, but also contributed to achieving the design teams goal of capturing the essence of the Marines.

NewSchool of Architecture and Design Team Wins First Place at International Competition

San Diego (PRWEB) May 11, 2012

A NewSchool of Architecture and Design (NSAD) team won the MCM Group Mock Firms International Skyscraper Award, the highest honor in the international 2012 Mock Firms Competition collegiate division held in Chicago May 34. The undergraduate team, which also won the titles of Top Sustainable Mock Firm and Top Architecture Mock Firm, was among six finalist teams in the competitions college division, formally called the International Skyscraper division. The finalists also included a second NSAD team composed of graduate students.

The fourth annual Mock Firms Competition was held by Chicago Architecture Today, an LLC online publication reporting on architecture in Chicago and beyond. The winning team members, who named their mock firm Capsule Architecture Lab, are all undergraduate students in NSADs Bachelor of Architecture program: Monika Banakaite, Wilfred Briones, Brandon Nash, Lam Thanh Nguyen and Carlos Sandoval. The groups NSAD faculty mentor was Raul Diaz, an associate with Roesling Nakamura Terada Architects. As the overall winner of the competition, the student team receives a $ 1,000 prize sponsored by the MCM Group International, an award-winning studio of planners and architects that has developed more than 2,000 projects around the world. Their primary practice areas include sustainable design, leisure and tourism and cultural and heritage projects.

The other NSAD finalist team, SALT (Sustainable: Architecture: Landscape: Technology), was made up of graduate students in the Master of Architecture program: Ann Capinguian, Kevin Colbert, Daniel Kwak and Rodrigo Villalon. The groups NSAD faculty mentor was Daniela Deutsch of the architecture firm exitecture.

We are proud of our two student teams that demonstrated as finalists the quality and professionalism that we encourage in all our students, said NSAD President Steve Altman. At NSAD we have made global experience part of our mission. This competition, with its focus on a hypothetical project in China, was an opportunity for our students to show how they can successfully apply their technical and creative backgrounds at an international level.

The competition, which includes a separate category for secondary school students, provides students with practice in creating and participating in a simulated architectural design firm in preparation for the work environment. Other finalist teams at the collegiate level were from Cornell University, Drexel University, Higher Technical School of Architecture (Spain), and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. NSAD was the only school in this years college competition with more than one team represented in the finals.

For the competition, the collegiate teams developed a mock design/build firm and prepared a project proposal for a skyscraper based on the competitions theme of versatility, which was defined as varied building uses and adaptability. The site of the conceptual project was Beijing, China. During the final competition, teams pitched their design concepts directly to some of the industrys leading design/build professionals to receive immediate feedback and critique. The collegiate teams competed in the categories of marketing, construction, organization, engineering, architecture and sustainability, in addition to the top overall mock firm.
