MGA Partners Architects Wins AIA Design Excellence Award for Philadelphia Salvation Army Kroc Center

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) June 17, 2012

MGA Partners Architects today announced it received a Design Excellence Award for The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in Philadelphia. The award, bestowed by the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), recognizes the project for introducing a new generation of community activity into an urban landscape once blighted by poverty and fractured by the loss of manufacturing.

Were honored to be recognized for this project, not only as an example of excellent design, but also for the buildings contribution to urban revitalization in North Philadelphia, says Daniel Kelley, FAIA, senior partner with MGA Partners and lead designer of the Center.

The 130,000-square-foot community center features sports and recreation facilities including a world-class aquatics center and thoughtfully planned worship, job training, and meeting and event spaces. Outdoor spaces were also critical to the overall design. They include walking trails, playgrounds, athletic fields, and even feature a functional urban farm, all compatible with promoting the Salvation Armys mission promoting well-being of the body, mind, and spirit.

Philadelphia Success Story

The Citation of Merit for design, for a project that bears an exceptional aspect and represents excellence, was singled out by the jury, including chairman David Dixon, FAIA. The building has been covered recently in Planning, Architectural Record and Interior Design magazines.

Since opening in November 2010, The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center has become a national symbol of the important roles played by charitable giving, architecture and urbanism. The Philadelphia project is one of 27 new centers built or under construction around the nation following a private donation of $ 1.5 billion several years ago by the philanthropist Joan Kroc.

Building the Salvation Army Kroc Center in North Philadelphia has provided a model for both future transformations of urban edges and industrial landscapes, as well as for community centers across the county. Reviving the centers abandoned industrial site has helped reunite forgotten neighborhoods by bridging them with other nearby residential areas through the creation of a destination and a new hub of activity.

According to the client, The Salvation Army, the work by MGA Partners has been central to creating a successful, efficient operation with a restorative impact on this neighborhood. It is also seen as a model of how private gifts to charities can have an impact far beyond their main intended beneficiaries. In fact, since the center opened in November 2010, the project has created hundreds of jobs, tens of millions in annual economic impact, and continues to serve an ever-growing membership of more than 9,500. The center directly employs about 450 people.

The award from the AIA was conferred during a ceremony in Harrisburg, PA on June 3, 2012. For more information on the award or on MGA Partners, contact Chris Sullivan at 914-462-2096 or chris(at)sullivanmumford(dot)com.

Passive House Retreat Wins 2012 EcoHome Design Award

Boston, MA (PRWEB) July 25, 2012

The Passive House Retreat, a modern green home by ZeroEnergy Design and AEDI Construction, received a Grand Award in the 2012 EcoHome Design Awards hosted by Hanleywood’s EcoHome Magazine. Aligned with the magazines philosophy, the award recognizes homes constructed using sustainable building practices and demonstrating innovative design and thoughtful use of site and materials.

EcoHome Design Award issue: http://mydigimag.rrd.com/publication/?i=118562&page=1

The new vacation residence located in a beautiful community on the New England coast features high performance and efficient use of space in a small package. The home is LEED Gold & Energy Star certified, built to the Passive House standard, and consumes only one tenth of the energy for heating compared to a similar new home built to code.

ZeroEnergy Design created a sleek, simple, gable roofed structure, and proposed the Passive House standard, which is a building performance standard that yields an extremely low-energy home. A combination of exceptional insulation, air sealing, high performance windows, and solar gain reduces the heating requirements to a fraction of a typical home, and uses only a very small heating system. The homeowners, whose extended families owned large, drafty, energy inefficient homes, immediately understood that the Passive House standard would provide both the energy savings and the increased comfort. They now enjoy a space with no wintertime drafts and very constant temperature throughout the home.

The Passive House Retreat is an example our firm’s ongoing commitment to pair a simple appealing aesthetic with exceptional energy performance said Stephanie Horowitz, AIA CPHC, Managing Director of ZeroEnergy Design.

The key project team members include ZeroEnergy Design for green architecture, Passive House consulting and mechanical design, and AEDI Construction for general contracting.

About ZED:

ZeroEnergy Design is a green architecture, mechanical design and energy consulting firm specializing in new construction and major renovations. The distinct union of great design and energy performance is enabled by a multidisciplinary team whose expertise spans architecture, mechanical engineering and finance. This integrated design approach makes ZED uniquely equipped to originate designs that are tailored to a clients requirements, environmental ideology, and unique sense of style.

NewSchool of Architecture and Design Team Wins First Place at International Competition

San Diego (PRWEB) May 11, 2012

A NewSchool of Architecture and Design (NSAD) team won the MCM Group Mock Firms International Skyscraper Award, the highest honor in the international 2012 Mock Firms Competition collegiate division held in Chicago May 34. The undergraduate team, which also won the titles of Top Sustainable Mock Firm and Top Architecture Mock Firm, was among six finalist teams in the competitions college division, formally called the International Skyscraper division. The finalists also included a second NSAD team composed of graduate students.

The fourth annual Mock Firms Competition was held by Chicago Architecture Today, an LLC online publication reporting on architecture in Chicago and beyond. The winning team members, who named their mock firm Capsule Architecture Lab, are all undergraduate students in NSADs Bachelor of Architecture program: Monika Banakaite, Wilfred Briones, Brandon Nash, Lam Thanh Nguyen and Carlos Sandoval. The groups NSAD faculty mentor was Raul Diaz, an associate with Roesling Nakamura Terada Architects. As the overall winner of the competition, the student team receives a $ 1,000 prize sponsored by the MCM Group International, an award-winning studio of planners and architects that has developed more than 2,000 projects around the world. Their primary practice areas include sustainable design, leisure and tourism and cultural and heritage projects.

The other NSAD finalist team, SALT (Sustainable: Architecture: Landscape: Technology), was made up of graduate students in the Master of Architecture program: Ann Capinguian, Kevin Colbert, Daniel Kwak and Rodrigo Villalon. The groups NSAD faculty mentor was Daniela Deutsch of the architecture firm exitecture.

We are proud of our two student teams that demonstrated as finalists the quality and professionalism that we encourage in all our students, said NSAD President Steve Altman. At NSAD we have made global experience part of our mission. This competition, with its focus on a hypothetical project in China, was an opportunity for our students to show how they can successfully apply their technical and creative backgrounds at an international level.

The competition, which includes a separate category for secondary school students, provides students with practice in creating and participating in a simulated architectural design firm in preparation for the work environment. Other finalist teams at the collegiate level were from Cornell University, Drexel University, Higher Technical School of Architecture (Spain), and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. NSAD was the only school in this years college competition with more than one team represented in the finals.

For the competition, the collegiate teams developed a mock design/build firm and prepared a project proposal for a skyscraper based on the competitions theme of versatility, which was defined as varied building uses and adaptability. The site of the conceptual project was Beijing, China. During the final competition, teams pitched their design concepts directly to some of the industrys leading design/build professionals to receive immediate feedback and critique. The collegiate teams competed in the categories of marketing, construction, organization, engineering, architecture and sustainability, in addition to the top overall mock firm.
