Coney Island, NYC: Photographer Ellen Fisch Reclaims the Boardwalk

New York City, NY (PRWEB) June 05, 2012

Coney Island, located in Brooklyn, NYC has long been celebrated as an iconic and historic cultural inspiration for artists, writers and musicians. Recently, Photographer Ellen Fisch, a Brooklyn NY native, focused her lens on the beach community where she spent much of her childhood. Fisch uses a unique architectural approach in her photography of the seaside community that brings a fresh view of the area.

Photographer Ellen Fisch is often drawn back to Coney Island where she had photographed the area as a child with her first Brownie Camera. While traveling to Coney Island over the years, the photographer observed that the area had declined in its allure for New Yorkers and tourists living outside of Brooklyn. However, in the last decade the beach community has been infused with new life by the arrival of the baseball team: Brooklyn Cyclones. Yet, many of the old temptations remain, such as Nathans Famous Hot Dogs, the Cyclone Rollercoaster and the Wonder Wheel. Throughout her trips to southern Brooklyn, Fisch always found Coney Island a sensory feast.

Situated on the Atlantic Ocean, Coney Island has long offered a chance for New Yorkers to enjoy the sea air, amusements and rides, flavorful street food, salt water bathing and strolls on the Boardwalk. Ellen Fisch captures the flavor, history and charm of Coney Island with her black and white, sepia and muted color architectural photographs. The structural element of the iconic rides, such as the Cyclone and the Wonder Wheel add to the architectural appeal of Coney Island for Fisch whose photographic focus is on elements of architecture.

Coney Island is a 4 mile peninsula and the boardwalk provides a path that connects some of its various sections. The boardwalk itself is a prime attraction that offers a place to enjoy the sea air and magnificent view of the Atlantic Ocean. Moreover, fishing, bicycle riding, skating and other leisure activities all take place on the slatted wooden strip that is suspended above the beach. The boardwalk is an integral part of Coney Island. Fischs recent photographs of Coney Island include many views of the boardwalk as an architectural structure in the landscape.

Coney Island is historically and animatedly colorful; therefore, I included photographs in a subtle palette along with my black and white and sepia photography, says Ellen Fisch. Furthermore, Fischs artistic photographic technique evokes fine art qualities in her work that recall the Coney Island paintings of the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Upon completing the series, Fisch transformed her images by printing the photographs on aluminum to give a luster to her photographs that affect the shine and glow of sea and sky of Coney Island. When the pieces were completed, the images radiated history and beauty through the medium. By chance, Ellen Fisch learned that slats of the original Coney Island boardwalk were available. I knew that wonderful memories would be restored by my photographing iconic Coney Island and including actual boardwalk in the completed works, says Fisch. She had the slats repurposed into frames with a Belgium Linen inset that replicate the color and fine texture of sand. The aluminum images are floated on the linen which is surrounded by the boardwalk slat frames to present a complete Coney Island experience.

Reclaiming the NYC Coney Island boardwalk as frames for my photographs of Coney Island emphasizes the Brooklyn communitys history and enhances my photographic art, says Ellen Fisch.

About the Photographer:

MGA Partners Architects Wins AIA Design Excellence Award for Philadelphia Salvation Army Kroc Center

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) June 17, 2012

MGA Partners Architects today announced it received a Design Excellence Award for The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in Philadelphia. The award, bestowed by the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), recognizes the project for introducing a new generation of community activity into an urban landscape once blighted by poverty and fractured by the loss of manufacturing.

Were honored to be recognized for this project, not only as an example of excellent design, but also for the buildings contribution to urban revitalization in North Philadelphia, says Daniel Kelley, FAIA, senior partner with MGA Partners and lead designer of the Center.

The 130,000-square-foot community center features sports and recreation facilities including a world-class aquatics center and thoughtfully planned worship, job training, and meeting and event spaces. Outdoor spaces were also critical to the overall design. They include walking trails, playgrounds, athletic fields, and even feature a functional urban farm, all compatible with promoting the Salvation Armys mission promoting well-being of the body, mind, and spirit.

Philadelphia Success Story

The Citation of Merit for design, for a project that bears an exceptional aspect and represents excellence, was singled out by the jury, including chairman David Dixon, FAIA. The building has been covered recently in Planning, Architectural Record and Interior Design magazines.

Since opening in November 2010, The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center has become a national symbol of the important roles played by charitable giving, architecture and urbanism. The Philadelphia project is one of 27 new centers built or under construction around the nation following a private donation of $ 1.5 billion several years ago by the philanthropist Joan Kroc.

Building the Salvation Army Kroc Center in North Philadelphia has provided a model for both future transformations of urban edges and industrial landscapes, as well as for community centers across the county. Reviving the centers abandoned industrial site has helped reunite forgotten neighborhoods by bridging them with other nearby residential areas through the creation of a destination and a new hub of activity.

According to the client, The Salvation Army, the work by MGA Partners has been central to creating a successful, efficient operation with a restorative impact on this neighborhood. It is also seen as a model of how private gifts to charities can have an impact far beyond their main intended beneficiaries. In fact, since the center opened in November 2010, the project has created hundreds of jobs, tens of millions in annual economic impact, and continues to serve an ever-growing membership of more than 9,500. The center directly employs about 450 people.

The award from the AIA was conferred during a ceremony in Harrisburg, PA on June 3, 2012. For more information on the award or on MGA Partners, contact Chris Sullivan at 914-462-2096 or chris(at)sullivanmumford(dot)com.

Marine Corps Chapel Honored with Prestigious International Interior Design Award

Quantico, Virginia (PRWEB) June 06, 2012

For masterful execution, near perfect detailing, and a wonderful integration between the interior and exterior architecture, the Semper Fidelis Memorial Chapel in Quantico, Virginia has been honored with a BESTaward by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), Rocky Mountain Chapter. Designed by Fentress Architects, the non-denominational Chapel is a space defined by simplicity, serenity, and purity of form and materials. The project expresses the concept of a canopied field chapel, providing a seamless transition of natural materials from exterior to interior.

Design for People Completed in 2009, the 2,276 square-foot Semper Fidelis Memorial Chapel enables friends and families to honor the sacrifices of fallen heroes and loved ones, or host events and ceremonies that look to the future. Expansive glass walls, etched with text expressing time-tested Marine Corps ideals, are framed by natural fieldstone and timber columns to establish a seamless relationship with nature. The chapels location offers a commanding hilltop view of the National Museum of the Marine Corps, while chapel and museum are physically linked by a network of intricately landscaped trails through Semper Fidelis Memorial Park. The connection alludes to the Corps motto of Semper Fi, or Always Faithful.

Aspects of the Chapel are intended to speak a soldiers language, with rectangular wood and stone pews that reference ammo boxes, and a sharply defined slate roof that evokes a humble tarp. The ceilings open-truss natural timber structure features exposed diagonal wood decking illuminated by soft indirect lighting that becomes a singular design element.

Sustainability The Chapel was designed to meet standards for LEED Silver certification. The design includes a geothermal HVAC system and a mechanical system that service a large, glass-walled space. This was achieved with a hidden under-floor air distribution delivery system for energy efficiency and comfort.

Outside Influencers Two outside influences were vital to the successful development of the Chapels design. The Heritage Foundation, which was the direct client, endorsed the metaphor of a field combat zone chapel as an important aspect of not only the development of the architectural expression, but also as an opportunity for the building to tell the story of the Marine Corps. Secondly, the Timothy Day Foundation, founded by Tim Day, a former Marine Captain and successful businessman, was a major donor and heavily involved in reviews of the final development of design. These two Foundations not only allowed for a seamless design process, but also contributed to achieving the design teams goal of capturing the essence of the Marines.

Lucifer Lighting Introduces Family of LED Downlights Up to 3000 Lumens

San Antonio, TX (PRWEB) May 15, 2012

For high-ceiling applications and spaces requiring greater light levels where definition and quality are paramount, Lucifer Lighting Company — in a major product expansion — has unveiled the Y Series of its acclaimed LEDX downlight family. The new line is being presented at international industry events in Las Vegas, Washington, D.C., and Frankfurt, Germany.

Building on its LEDX product range first introduced in January 2011, Lucifer Lightings new Y Series downlights are engineered for ceilings up to 30 feet tall, using LEDs delivering 1300 (17W), 2000 (35W) and 3000 (53W) lumens. The ability to deliver 3000 lumens (lm) puts these downlights among only a handful of fixtures available anywhere in the world that are capable of offering as much light with an LED, but the Y Series fixture designs are unlike anything else, too. The LEDX can be installed zero-sightline meaning that the fixtures trim is flush with the ceiling. LEDX has garnered early acclaim for its encompassing package of scale, aesthetics and performance a result consistent with the companys new brand message, Design, Define, Disappear.

The new Y Series debuted in June at Light+Building in Germany, and this week will be presented to hospitality designers at HD Expo and to U.S. architects at the AIA 2012 National Convention.

While 4.5-inch aperture downlights with 6-inch overall diameters represent a totally new direction for Lucifer Lighting, says Alexandra Mathews, Vice President of International Sales & Marketing for the company, the minimalist proportion and elegant design of the Y Series coupled with high technical performance, in particular for accent lighting and wall washing are consistent with the look and functionality of our pinhole downlights, for which we are so well known.

While designers and architects need to use high-efficacy lighting sources, says Mathews, they have consistently told Lucifer Lighting they arent happy with the scale, glare level and mediocre performance of products on the market recently. The new Y Series is completely unique in the marketplace, she says, achieving high levels of brightness and beam control with literally no glare, whether the ceiling is 8 feet or 30 feet.

The new fixtures capitalize on Lucifer Lightings blend of technology and design. While our cutting-edge LED modules are essential to the successful performance of the LEDX Y Series product line, its really the aesthetics that will drive interest among architects, lighting designers and end-users, says Mathews. Nothing in the world looks like this its essentially a new visual idiom for high-ceiling downlights.

Commercial, Hospitality and Museum Applications

With their power and wide apertures, the Y Series downlights are suitable for myriad applications, and offer an extension in scale from Lucifer Lightings pinhole Z Series.

The Y Series introduction allows architects and designers to employ the two downlight families in tandem the Z Series for lower ceilings and the Y Series for greater heights so the look of the recessed lighting will be consistent throughout, regardless of ceiling height. This makes the range especially valuable for use in the hospitality industry for hotels and restaurants, in cultural venues such as museums, and in retail settings and high-end residences. Both product lines can be used indoors and outdoors, too.

For double-height spaces such as atriums, ballrooms, lobbies, store interiors and more, the new LEDX Y Series offers occupant-friendly performance, and provides an unobtrusive yet powerful solution without the glare problems and institutional look that detract from typical downlights on the market. This fixture family affords designers the tools and flexibility they expect from Lucifer Lighting, including 45

Indusface Launches Powerful Anti Malvertising Feature to Counter Malicious Online Advertisements

Ottawa, Canada (PRWEB) June 18, 2012

Indusface, an award winning website security company, has released a powerful anti malvertising feature in the latest version of its flagship product IndusGuard. This new feature aims to combat the threat that businesses and publishing networks face due to increased spread of malware using online advertising, a lucrative setting for miscreants to attack websites through malvertising. IndusGuard addresses this whilst providing continuous, automated and comprehensive security testing for vulnerability assessment, application audit, malware monitoring, blacklisting and defacement detection. This complemented with expert revalidation, business logic and zero false positives checks enable Indusface to provide total website security for businesses globally.

More than 10 million users were exposed to drive-by exploits in February 2012. The malware attacks have doubled since last year, and there is a 95% probability that an internet user will hit an infected page within three months of web browsing. Nearly 10 billion ad impressions were compromised by malvertising in 2010 alone which makes malvertising amongst the fastest growing security threats online, as any website with advertising is a target.

Internet ad spend is expected to reach $ 94.97 billion in 2013.The lure for fraction of profits from this pie has malvertisers using advertisements to serve up links to harmful sites on legitimate websites. In order to compromise a website, embedding a malicious code is not a necessity. In some cases, users do not even have to click ads to trigger malware; hidden iframes can be called using JavaScripts which load files containing malicious code to exploit various vulnerabilities. Users are more likely to click on the ad because it is present on a site which they trust.

Trusted brands like Facebook, Spotify and Twitter whose services are mostly free, have to derive their revenue from advertisers. Ad sponsored services are necessary to help businesses generate revenue, but are extremely prone to malvertisers on the prowl as its tough to control the content provided by these ads. Various organizations have been exploited time and again, despite stringent online security measures, thus making it imperative to maintain constant vigilance and use anti malvertising technology to counter these attacks.

It is because of the presence of such a hostile threat landscape that Indusface has enhanced its flagship product IndusGuard to help prevent malvertising attacks through all types of ad networks. IndusGuard is a zero touch, non- intrusive, cloud based solution which safeguards websites by daily, automatic and comprehensive scanning for systems and application vulnerabilities, and malware. It provides a broad coverage of security issues, which includes finding known and unknown malware. Indusfaces next generation automated web scanning platform delivers IndusGuard Basic, IndusGuard Advanced and IndusGuard Premium solutions to customers worldwide, whilst addressing the needs of the most basic to large mission critical websites. With IndusGuard, websites can now safely display third party ads without having to worry about whether anti-malvertising controls have been implemented or not.

The new anti malvertising feature will help scan and detect malicious ads, trace their source, provide immediate alerts, and identify zero day malvertising through the wide ranging security intelligence of IndusGuards powerful web scanning technology on a daily basis. Ads will get scanned with a high level of automation which will deep dive into the main and sub ad networks. Protecting users from potential malware attacks is important for the companys image and reputation. Sites overrun with malware get blacklisted by search engines. With websites being connected to many third party networks for ads, link building etc, it is imperative to get the content from them scanned before being placed on the main website. This will go a long way in protecting brand reputation, reduce technical and liability costs which end up affecting businesses and protect users from malvertising attacks.

Extensive research has shown that malvertising continues to be amongst the top 3 threats online. Organizations need to adopt stringent measures to proactively secure their websites and protect users from malicious ads. IndusGuards ground breaking technology and deep understanding of security needs will help secure online advertising and protect websites from third party malware, enabling businesses to manage and mitigate such risky exposures on a daily basis, Claude Essomba, President & Founder of GetSec Sarl.

The incidents of malvertising are on an alarming rise with millions of users being affected and most of them not knowing it till its too late. Unsecured third party content can very easily damage brand image and blacklist websites from prominent search engines, leading to huge accountable and non-accountable losses running into billions of dollars. Therefore, tackling malware and malvertising from an early stage is absolutely mandatory. The growing need to fight this has been identified amongst our clients, which is why we have expanded IndusGuard to include the new anti malvertising feature. With this expansion, we have significantly strengthened our vision of ensuring that our product offering covers all aspects of security, giving our customers unique continuous total website security coverage said Dhanya Thakkar, President, Indusface.
