The company launched a new program, Manufacturers of the Future, to answer this demand and provide teachers and students with the latest in design machining software technology at costs that can easily fit into their budgets.

The new program offers advanced CAD/CAM licenses for classrooms, or labs that need multiple stations, at a reduced cost. The teachers are provided with training products, such as instructional videos, and are given technical support to ensure they are successful in developing curriculums and teaching CAD/CAM.

The program was designed to prepare students to enter the manufacturing workforce readily equipped with the necessary design knowledge as well as the actual software required for machining.

BobCAD-CAM sponsored Acton-Boxborough Regional High School in Acton, Massachusetts with a $ 53,000 CAD/CAM software grant so that the high school industrial engineering program could have the required technology for their students to excel in their labs.

At this years Indiana Statewide Machine Trades Contest for high school students, BobCAD-CAM awarded software to the first, second, and third place CNC Division winners, as well as the first place Advanced Division winner.

Most recently, BobCAD-CAM sponsored a Canadian student team, Blazing Arrow, in the F1 in Schools Technology Challenge. The team was provided with software and grant money to design, create, and race their own model car against other schools in the challenge. The team took home the 2012 Canadian F1 in Schools Championship, the Fastest Car Award, the Best Collaboration Team Award, and the Best Marketing Award. BobCAD-CAM also provided the team with travel funds to attend the F1 in Schools Technology Challenge World Finals in Abu Dhabi, where they came in a very close second for fastest car.

Stamps Teach! Americas Stamp Club Encourages Teachers to Bring Stamps into the Classroom

The American Philatelic Society helps teachers learn how to use the colorful world of postage stamps to expand students classroom experience.

Postage stamps are an easy and fun way to increase student participation in classroom activities. Stamp subjects can enhance any curriculum from poetry to physics to phys ed. They also can be used with any grade level, although they are particularly effective with elementary school children. These tiny bits of paper, and a little imagination, can bring lessons to life.

Here are a few suggestions for incorporating stamps into typical lesson plans:

History can be difficult for young students to grasp, but by engaging the class in hands-on activities, the past can become part of their world. Take the story of Lewis and Clark: how can their mission to explore the West and find a passage to the Pacific Ocean be made relevant to 21st-century students? Teachers can highlight the explorers route across a modern map of the United States, then challenge their students to follow that trail using stamps. Where did they go? Who did they meet? What did they see? Students can affix the appropriate stamps to the map or make their own illustrated diary of the trip. Social studies teachers often require students to prepare a report on one of the fifty states. Using stamps to illustrate the story makes otherwise dry facts become much more exciting. Over the years, the United States Postal Service has issued stamps with state flags, trees, flowers, birds, famous architecture, historic sites, notable personalities, historic events, agriculture, arts, and industry. For example, a report on Pennsylvania might include famous residents such as writer Louisa May Alcott, actor Jimmy Stewart, baseball great Roberto Clemente, and President Dwight D. Eisnhower. In addition, the student might add stamps featuring the hemlock (state tree), whitetail deer (state mammal), the Liberty Bell, the Slinky, Hershey chocolate, Gettysburg, first U.S. oil well, and Valley Forge. The APS offers 19 sets of free downloadable, full-color album pages featuring different states at http://stamps.org/Free-Album-Pages. More are in preparation.

In fact, Americas stamp club has a WHOLE SERIES of free stamp albums that can serve as excellent tools for teachers looking for new ideas. These mini-albums cover fishing, baseball, toys, national parks, holidays, movies, space, the Olympics, Black Heritage, Hispanic Americans, and more. A brief history of the story behind each stamp is included.

Many English classes ask students to keep a journal. Why not A Stamp Album About ME? Each member of the class would create a personal album using stamps to show some of the students favorite things: sports, food, hobbies, vacations, food, activities, pets, holidays, etc. The album could include separate chapters on family and friends.

Stamps are a relatively inexpensive addition to the curriculum. The local post office and mail delivered to private homes or businesses are good sources for new and used stamps. Local stamp clubs often will share duplicate stamps if teachers mention that they want to use them in the classroom.

Teachers, Parents Praise New Reading Program In Pennsylvania School District For Helping Struggling Students Increase Their Test Scores

As the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in one of the most diverse school districts in Pennsylvania, Dr. Catherine Sweeney needed a way to boost the progress of her high-risk student population. Then, one of her teachers discovered StudyDog, an interactive reading program designed for elementary schools.

Our students were not making any type of progress, Sweeney explained. We have to prepare our students for them to be successful in the 21st century. I think the key is that you need to keep up with technology.

The Pocono Mountain School District faced several challenges with more than half of the districts roughly 10,000 students economically disadvantaged. About 21 percent of the students had learning disabilities and 5 percent were learning English for the first time.

Forty percent of kindergarteners in the Pocono Mountain School District did not possess basic phonemic skills when they entered the school system last fall. The lack of those basic skills makes it incredibly difficult for students to learn phonics at the primary level. But using Web-based software from StudyDog, teachers tailored interactive learning programs to the specific needs of each child.

We have been extremely pleased with the program, Sweeney said.

After testing StudyDog last spring in classes for children with special needs, administrators rolled out the program for all students in kindergarten through second grade.
