Award-Winning Designer and Architect Clive Wilkinson to Speak at NewSchool of Architecture and Design Nov. 14

Clive Wilkinson, an architect, designer and strategist who has received national acclaim, will speak at NewSchool of Architecture and Design(NSAD) Nov. 14 as part of the schools 2012-2013 lecture series. The event is free and open to the public. Wilkinson will speak about The Architecture of the Large Organization.

Acknowledging the social and cultural influences on the workplace that are pressing for massive change, Wilkinsons lecture will address the act of building as an opportunity for large corporations and institutions to transition from one organizational form to another. The lecture will address emerging paradigms and the sociological forces at play, with examples of how these are interpreted within the architecture and design work of his firm Clive Wilkinson Architects.

About Clive Wilkinson: Clive Wilkinson is an architect, designer and strategist; and founder of Clive Wilkinson Architects, based in Los Angeles. Established in 1991, his practice has built up an international reputation with projects for clients such as Google, Nokia, Disney, Macquarie and TBWA/Chiat/Day. While dramatic in its architecture, his design process is primarily focused on the social agenda of buildings, and how people connect with each other. His work is recognized for its creative adaptation of urbanism concepts into the interior complexity of buildings. Clive Wilkinson was inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame in 2005, honored as a Master of Design by Fast Company magazine in 2006, and a Pioneer of Design by the IIDA in 2011. The practice has been recognized for its radical workplace and education projects with over 75 design awards and is the recipient of the 2012 Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Excellence in Interior Design.

His buildings are keenly aligned with their environmental context, culture and intent. His design philosophy developed through work on Colorado projects such as 1999 Broadway, with its blend of modernist elements that never the less relate to the historic nature of the Holy Ghost Church with which it shares space; Denver International Airport, which quickly became a regional icon and one of the most recognized airports in the world; and vital life-safety work on the beloved Colorado State Capitol. The client challenged the team to design a building that will enhance communications between the best minds in biomedical regenerative research. To create this collaboratory, designers shifted the typical lab plan and created open research neighborhoods, that come together in common use informal lounge-like spaces where chance meetings and interactions between professionals of different disciplines may occur. Max Isley, CMKBD, has owned and operated Hampton Kitchens of Raleigh, Inc. since 1974. He is a licensed general contractor and has been a Certified Kitchen Designer since 1981, longer than any other active designer in the state. After achieving the Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD) and Certified Bath Designer (CBD) professional designations, Max obtained the Certified Master Kitchen & Bath Designer (CMKBD) professional designation through an extensive educational, examination and endorsement process coupled with many years of kitchen/bath industry experience. Max is one of only a few kitchen designers in the country who have achieved this, the highest professional certification available in the industry. Max’s custom kitchens have appeared in numerous award-winning Parade of Homes and Street of Dreams entries. Max has designed kitchens all over the United States and the world. He is also an international speaker, consultant, and instructor for kitchen design and remodeling workshops, and is a member of the Speaker’s Bureau of the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA).

Max judges design contests for the National Kitchen & Bath Association. In addition, he is one of only a few Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designers in the United States who is asked by the National Kitchen & Bath Association to grade the kitchen designs of hundreds of candidates who sit for the Certified Kitchen Designer exam each year. Max has been nominated by the National Kitchen & Bath Association as Remodeler of the Year and has received the Certified Kitchen Designer National Merit Award on six separate occasions. Max is the former president of his local NKBA chapter and served two terms on the NKBA Board of Directors for a total of 8 years; the last two years he served as Treasurer and then Secretary.
