A recent press release by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) states that new home construction rose 2.3 percent nationally to an adjusted annual rate of 750,000 units in August. New figures released from HUD and the U.S. Census Bureau confirm this increase was fueled entirely by gains in the single-family sector, where new construction accelerated in every region for a combined 5.5 percent gain to 535,000 units, the fastest growth in two years.

“Builders across the country have been reporting noticeable improvement in the number of serious buyers who are in the market for a new home, and today’s report shows that this is translating to some welcome gains in construction activity,” said Barry Rutenberg, chairman of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) in a recent press release. “While there is still plenty of room for improvement, it’s encouraging to see this continuing trend that is spurring much-needed job growth.”

According to The House Designers, a leading provider of online stock house plans, house plan sales continued to increase by 10% each month over 2011. The top 5 states for house plan sales in 2012 are the same as in 2011 and include Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Georgia.

“The pace of overall housing production has been edging gradually upward all year as consumers become more confident in their local housing markets, and the latest data are further evidence that the housing recovery is here to stay,” added NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe. “That said, the pace of this recovery continues to be constrained by various hurdles, including a tough lending environment, inaccurate appraisals and more recently, rising prices on key building materials.”

The latest data from the U.S. Architecture Billings Index (ABI) has been released and it points to good news for construction businesses and real estate developers. In August, this leading construction indicator rose by 1.5 points, indicating a possible recovery in the U.S. construction sector. Interior and exterior finishing work is being completed on Sturgis Charter Schools new West Campus building. The 45,000 square foot building was constructed off-site at Innovative Design and Building Services (IDBS) Liverpool, Pa., facility and transported to the building site in Hyannis, Mass. A hybrid of on-site and off-site construction methods were employed allowing for tall ceiling heights and capitalizing on off-site efficiencies. Utilizing off-site techniques for the majority of the project, along with IDBS proprietary systems and processes, also aided in controlling the overall project costs.

The completion of the two-story structure, which includes numerous classrooms, a faculty lounge, labs, a library, office spaces, and an amphitheater-like seating space, doubles the schools capacity of 400 to over 800 students. Opening in the fall of 2012, the school will continue to offer an International Baccalaureate diploma which focuses on teaching students to be caring, reflective and open-minded.

Planning for the west campus began in November of 2009, but progress stalled. The momentum picked up when IDBS modular construction method was introduced as a solution. Off-site construction means less time, less overhead and less waste, which gave Sturgis Charter Schools reduced and fixed construction costs needed to complete the project.

The initial design was reviewed and adjusted to maximize the efficiencies of off-site construction. Innovative solutions were utilized to achieve larger, open rooms with high ceilings. All 96 building sections, constructed to meet the wind loads and hurricane requirements needed for the seaside school, were delivered and erected by IDBS crew in just 3 weeks. Onsite crews followed behind with HVAC, sprinklers, and completing the interior and exterior finishes.

Minimize site disruption with off-site construction

Off-site construction is well suited for classrooms and educational buildings. Schools can be designed and constructed to meet most architectural and customer specifications. By utilizing off-site methods, the disruption at the building site is limited, resulting in cleaner, safer environments for teachers and students. In most case, on-site work can be performed during summer sessions, further reducing the impact on the existing campus.

Kueker Construction Education Visionary Award by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Education Foundation. In evaluating Thomas-Mobleys achievements, the award committee noted her role in leading the creation of NSADs fully online Master of Construction Management program.

The award committee was deeply impressed by the dedication of Linda Thomas-Mobley to the field of construction management and related fields through both her professional background and education initiatives, said Robin Fulton Meyer, NAWIC Education Foundation president-elect 20112012. Her tireless efforts to raise awareness of the construction management profession include the development of an online program through NSAD that increases access to quality education and advancement in the construction management field.

At NSAD, Thomas-Mobley is credited with updating and adapting the schools Bachelor of Science in Construction Management program to meet the industrys future needs and with leading the effort to create the Master of Construction Management online program. The online program, which can be completed in one year, is taught by construction management experts and uses integrated media in a convenient online format for working professionals and/or students worldwide. Students work in virtual project teams and the program emphasizes knowledge in new standards for building and construction materials, worker safety, energy efficiency, environmental protection and risk mitigation.

The Carol A. Kueker Construction Education Visionary Award recognizes a U.S. educator or advocate who has a passion for and dedication to construction education. NAWIC is dedicated to advancing women in construction, while the affiliated NAWIC Education Foundation focuses on promoting construction education.

This is the latest honor received by Thomas-Mobley, who also was named the 2012 Executive of the Year by the NAWIC San Diego Chapter for her involvement in the construction industry as well as her leadership skills and commitment to creating a quality construction management program at NSAD. Prior to joining NSAD in 2010, Thomas-Mobley was a faculty member at the Georgia Institute of Technology for 13 years, serving the last three years as associate chair of a building construction program. Her previous work experience includes serving as a construction manager for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, a senior attorney in corporate and real estate law and a lieutenant in the United States Navy Civil Engineer Corps. She holds a Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a concentration in Building Construction, a J.D. from the University of Miami and an M.S. and B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Florida.
