Hidden Hearing Respond to Study of Biological Clocks and Suggest Alarm Clocks For Hard of Hearing

(PRWEB UK) 21 December 2012

Researchers from the Department of Neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, have identified a gene called Period 1 that determines how easy it is for somebody to wake up in the mornings.

The gene varies in night and morning people and belongs to a number of genes that are responsible for all biological clocks and the rhythms of physiological changes in organisms.

People with hearing loss may find it additionally difficult to get up in the morning if they cant hear their alarm clock and dont want to sleep with their hearing aid in.

To help, Hidden Hearing stocks a range of amplified alarm clocks that are specifically designed for people with hearing loss and have a louder alarm as well as a shaker that can be placed under the pillow to add to its ability to stir someone. The alarm clocks range from

San Franciscos ROBOTSPEAK Announces Special Goal For Modular Synth Building Workshops

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) June 15, 2012

ROBOTSPEAK, the premier San Francisco music production school for electronic music, is beginning build sessions that concentrate on the construction of a historically accurate modular synthesizer from the early 1970s. This month’s module is the classic 1973 Serge Multimode Filter, a powerful and very flexible synthesizer module originally created by Serge Alexandrovich Tcherepnin during the 1970s.

As the summer progresses, we’ll be focusing on these elegant and unique Serge designs, both from the standpoint of circuitry and user interface, Steve Taormina of ROBOTSPEAK said. Upcoming builds will focus on several other unique Serge modules that together comprise a compact modular system. By fall 2012, we anticipate having several of these ‘replica’ CGS Serge Modular Systems nearing completion and being used in our modular analog synthesis theory classes that occur every few months.

The 1973 Serge Multimode Filter, which is the focus during June, has a very bright, somewhat acoustic sound quality. It features a range switch that kicks it into subharmonic mode for filtering low-frequency oscillations (LFOs), controlling voltages, etc.

Although the circuit can be built into most modular formats or a stand-alone box, the music production school has chosen to honor its heritage with a limited run of Serge-style face panels done with 1973-inspired panel graphics and banana-jack patching.

ROBOTSPEAK’s modular synth build sessions are conducted with a guest lecturer and utilize open class formats that encourage participants to work socially and co-operatively.

Joining a ROBOTSPEAK modular build session will not only provide you with a useful self-built tool to enhance your music making but will also allow you to become aware of the experience of creative and enjoyable problem-solving completed within a team, Taormina said. Each session will be overseen and advised by a different synth designer/builder, who will offer their expertise and time to bring back the communal modular synth building mind set from the past.

The workshops cost around $ 175 per session and the PCB and most of the supplies are included to build one module. Depending on what the workshop is building, the cost of materials and details may change. Be sure to check the blog for current information at http://www.coa-modular.com/workshops/.

We will build one every month, Taormina said. This is more than a product-based workshop. We want to build a monthly group where we can hang out and solder, and learn and share do it yourself (SDIY). Whatever system you have, we can help get your module regulated and paneled up. If you want to start a system, we can help get a case and power supply unit (psu) sorted.

Participants will be able to take their module home.

For the most current information about the workshops, visit ROBOTSPEAKs Facebook page.

To reserve a spot or for more information about any of ROBOTSPEAKs products or services, call 415-230-0840, or view the music production specialist on the Web at http://www.robotspeak.com or on Facebook. ROBOTSPEAK is located at 589 1/2 Haight St. in San Francisco and is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m., and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. ROBOTSPEAK is also available by appointment.

About ROBOTSPEAK

ROBOTSPEAK is a school located in San Francisco that specializes in teaching basic to advance electronic music and DJ classes, such as handling different DJ equipment to learning music production. Its classes are designed to empower the home and project-studio musician with real-world skills, enabling them to make better music now with gear and musical instruments they actually own.

National Trust For Historic Preservation Names North Dakota’s Elkhorn Ranch One Of America’s Most Endangered Places

Washinton DC (PRWEB) June 07, 2012

This annual list spotlights important examples of the nations architectural, cultural and natural heritage that are at risk of destruction or irreparable damage. More than 230 sites have been on the list over its 25-year history, and in that time, only a handful of listed sites have been lost.

A proposed road and bridge near Elkhorn Ranch would visually disrupt the landscape as well as introduce industrial traffic, noise and dust, through the very place that inspired Roosevelts views on conservation, according to Stephanie Meeks, President of the National Trust. Additionally, a permit for a proposed private gravel mining operation directly across the Little Missouri River from the Elkhorn Ranch Site is nearing approval from the U.S. Forest Service.

Earlier this week, the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) announced its support for a proposal to designate the area where Roosevelt ranched before he became president as a national monument. Tweed Roosevelt, great grandson of Theodore Roosevelt and President of the TRA, said today he welcomes the recognition by the National Trust and will work with the Trust staff to preserve the site.

North Dakota is lucky to have one of the most famous sites in the history of conservation, Theodore Roosevelt’s Elkhorn Ranch, right in its beautiful Bad Lands, said Tweed Roosevelt. TR fought those who would ravage our natural resources for the benefit of the few. Now it is time to fight to save his ranch from the same type of selfish people today who would destroy it for their own personal gain.

Lowell Baier, former president of the Boone and Crockett Club, and a trustee of the Theodore Roosevelt Association, said: The Elkhorn Ranch is the very cradle of conservation in America, the sacred ground of the conservation movement, a geographic, tangible Arcadian icon of Americans cultural identity, symbolizing the conservation ethic unique to our Nation which Theodore Roosevelt conceived here in the 1880s. Hence it has also been referred to as the Walden Pond of the American West.

The Elkhorn Ranch, located along the Little Missouri River in the rugged North Dakota Badlands, inspired President Theodore Roosevelts deep appreciation for the American West and for conservation. Roosevelt first traveled to the Dakota Badlands in the 1880s to hunt buffalo and was so taken by the area that he invested in two ranches, making the Elkhorn Ranch his home. It was here that he first witnessed the rapid degradation of America’s wilderness and wildlife, and recognized the importance of conserving such national resources. The heart of the ranch is part of Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

During his presidency, Roosevelt set aside over 230 million acres of public lands in the form of National Parks, National Monuments, National Wildlife Refuges and National Forests. Roosevelt said of Elkhorn, I never would have been President if it had not been for my experience in North Dakota.

“The Elkhorn Ranch is not only a picturesque historic site, but as a home to Theodore Roosevelt, a true cradle of conservation in the United States, said Trust President Meeks. “Building a road this close to the Elkhorn Ranch would permanently destroy the nationally significant historic place. Roosevelt had an enormous influence on Americas public lands system and promoted nationwide conservation of natural and cultural sites. His legacy should continue today through protection of this place.

Public comments on the proposed road and Little Missouri River crossing are being taken by the Federal Highway Administration until June 22. They can be submitted by mail to Kadrmas, Lee and Jackson, Jennifer Turnbow, Project Manager, 128 Soo Line Dr., Bismarck, ND 58501 or by email to jennifer(dot)turnbow(at)kljeng(dot)com. Public comments on the proposed gravel mining operation are being taken by the U.S. Forest Service until June 11. A copy of the environmental assessment on the gravel operation, and the opportunity to comment, can be found at http://www.fs.fed.us/r1/dakotaprairie/.

Members of the public are invited to learn more about what they can do to support these 11 historic places and hundreds of other endangered sites at http://www.PreservationNation.org/places

Have a Seat in LOON, Keilhauers New Side/Stacking Chair

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) June 11, 2012

Keilhauer introduces LOON, by Tom Deacon, a stacking chair whose fluid lines were inspired by nature.

Loon is functionally a stacking or guest chair, but that designation is too simplistic to describe its design, for the natural arcs and sculptural curves of its form belie its basic purpose.

I was interested in creating a more integral relationship between the steel frame and the seat and back, says designer Tom Deacon. Most chairs of this type are compositions of linear elements (the frame) and surfaces which they support (the seat and backrest). I wanted to think about volumes rather than sticks and planes. So I started with a slightly larger than usual tube for the legs out of which grow the arms and back in a continuous volume.

In fact, apart from the seat, the entire chair – legs, arms, and back – is defined by just two continuous surfaces flowing up out of the legs to create the graceful arcing forms of the molded elements.

Ive always found inspiration in the beauty of forms in nature, the sense of grace inherent in things at home in their own skin. Its a quality demonstrated by the work of photographer Karl Blossfeldt, who believed that any formal problem faced by a designer or engineer has already been solved by nature. It involves line, balance, proportion and is something more often noticeable by its absence. When you get it right theres a sense of ease and inevitability, of the solution having been somewhat obvious, though for the designer, thats definitely from the perspective of hindsight!

Mike Keilhauer, president, Keilhauer, is delighted to be working with Tom again after a break of several years. Tom took some time away from industrial design to focus on other interests and activities, he explains, but I thought that this project would be perfect to entice him back to design for us. I am so very pleased with the results. With Loon, we have added the ultimate side/stacking chair series to our product offering. It is beautiful and modern, evocative of abstract sculpture, while being comfortable and providing excellent support.

Loons family begins with the simple stacker: with or without arms, nylon seat and back. Add upholstery to the seat, and it acquires a different, sophisticated aesthetic. The optional upholstered back pad adds dimension and extra comfort.

The Loon series is extensive, with tables to complement the chairs.

Bike Rack Shops Identifies how Bike Racks are Poised to Remain One of the Least Expensive Ways to Earn Points when LEED Standards Changes Take Place in November

Lake Forest, IL (PRWEB) May 01, 2012

The U.S. Green Building Council is preparing to enact its modifications to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification requirements in November. Every change by the Council is to promote its goal of reducing emissions, and in this case, to benefit cyclists and encourage more people to ride their bikes instead of driving. Cyclists should come to see commercial bike racks in more convenient locations and be integrated into the buildings design scheme more seamlessly.

According to the Councils website, key changes regarding bike racks dictate the maximum distance an outdoor bike rack can be from a buildings front door, and how the bike racks must be within 200 yards of a bicycle network. The bicycle network requirement is new, and an additional guideline stipulates how a school, transit stop, or 10 other uses must be within three miles for a building to receive credit. Some builders may find difficulty integrating bike racks into a buildings architectural landscape or even come to find that the building doesnt meet the location requirements for including a commercial bike rack.

The changes make it all the more important for builders to find commercial bike racks that are going to fit the design aesthetic of the building. Low-profile racks, like the bike dock, only require a small footprint, and they dont disrupt the visual appeal of the building. Wave-style bike racks, on the other hand, can accommodate many bikes and are available in a wide range of colors.

The cycling enthusiasts at Bike Rack Shops view the changes as good ones. People are going to be willing to install commercial bike racks that are more attractive and more convenient for cyclists to use, which is in line with our goal of encouraging people to ride their bikes, remarked Alex Miller, President of Renaissance Retail, Bike Rack Shops parent company. They also feel the more finished looks of the buildings will benefit builders, full-time occupants of buildings, and visitors to buildings certified under the U.S. Green Councils new standards.

Bike Rack Shops was the Internets first dedicated source for meeting the vehicle and storage rack needs of cyclists and has evolved into the Internets leading source for bicycle and storage racks. Its mission is to provide outstanding service, the lowest allowable prices, and the widest selection of leading bike rack brands. Headquartered in Lake Forest, Illinois, Bike Rack Shops is a division of Renaissance Retail, the Internets leading source for specialty consumer products.
